MICHR Seeks an Assistant Managing Director for Clinical Research Management

MICHR serves investigators from the Schools of Medicine, Business, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as the College of Engineering and the Division of Kinesiology. In 2008, MICHR supported more than 600 investigators conducting more than 350 individual research projects. Currently, approximately 25 staff FTEs in 5 units are dedicated to clinical research management service provision, with an overall annual budget of approximately $1.8M. However, faculty conducting clinical and translational research still lack an accessible, comprehensive, and integrated support system for managing research projects. The central charge of this position is to lead the evolution of MICHR's clinical research management resources toward that vision. In addition, the Assistant Managing Director must work closely with institutional stakeholders to continue to refine and respond to emerging institutional plans in this arena.

MICHR's aims include creating an academic home for clinical and translational research; training the next generation of research teams; providing integrated research infrastructure; catalyzing new translational discoveries; and partnering with the national CTSA consortium. The Assistant Managing Director for Clinical Research Management will work in partnership with a faculty Associate Director to manage all daily operations related to MICHR's Clinical Research Management working group. The faculty Associate Director will be recruited at a later date, as the institutional vision for this arena evolves. Responsibilities include overseeing existing managers and staff within the workgroup, proposing and managing a budget, developing a sustainable business model for service provision, proposing and executing new service lines and re-organization, and achievement of program deliverables. He/she will also serve as a member of MICHR's Executive Leadership Council, and provide substantive input to the direction and strategic planning for MICHR as a whole.

In addition, the Assistant Managing Director is expected to play a significant role in planning and implementing new service initiatives, developing strategies for customer outreach and communication, establishing partnerships with other university research infrastructure units (particularly IRB and DRDA), ensuring excellent customer relations, collaborating in training curriculum development, and developing evaluation outcomes and metrics for the working group. The Assistant Managing Director will ultimately be responsible for strategically deploying resources within the working group to provide maximum value to clinical and translational researchers. The position will require an ability to navigate and leverage existing university resources, and create new partnerships throughout the University. Finally, the Assistant Managing Director will be expected to participate in national and consortium-wide activities relevant to clinical research management. This position will be filled at either the Associate or Intermediate level, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Proposing and managing a budget, hiring and supervision of all program staff, and achievement of program deliverables.
  • Serve as a member of MICHR's Executive Leadership Council, and provide substantive input to the direction and strategic planning for MICHR as a whole.
  • Oversee the management of all daily operations related to MICHR's Clinical Research Management working group. Responsibilities include developing a sustainable business model for service provision, proposing and executing new service lines and re-organization.
  • In addition, the Assistant Managing Director is expected to play a significant role in planning and implementing new service initiatives, developing strategies for customer outreach and communication, establishing partnerships with other university research infrastructure units (particularly IRB and DRDA), ensuring excellent customer relations, collaborating in training curriculum development, and developing evaluation outcomes and metrics for the working group. Participate in national and consortium-wide activities relevant to clinical research management; contribute to the body of knowledge on clinical research management.

Position Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Five years of relevant job experience in the administration of clinical and/or translational research programs or infrastructure
  • Experience in clinical research within a University setting is preferred
  • Track record of success in development and implementation of new initiatives in research support, service provision, and research-related training programs desired
  • Experience in managing program budgets and supervising significant staff units required
  • Excellent management and communication skills
