MICHR Seeks Managing Director

The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research is seeking a Managing Director. The MICHR Managing Director will oversee MICHR operations in the following ways:

 

Leadership:

Understand, communicate, and operationalize the vision of the Faculty Director. Develop the organizational strategies and tactics to achieve the goals of the Faculty Director, and ensure that they are implemented. Act as proxy for the Faculty Director in making daily strategic/tactical decisions; exercise astute judgments regarding which decisions are to be made independently and which should be referred to faculty leadership, NIH, or institutional bodies. Ensure a unified purpose and direction for all staff members; detect and resolve instances of dis-coordination between different units.

Institute Relations:

Serve as the primary staff contact for the Institute. Interface with institutional bodies and stakeholders to advance the mission, ensure appropriate cooperation with other university entities, and maintain compliance. Interface with customers to build new customer relationships, address emerging customer needs, and ensure high customer satisfaction. Identify and implement opportunities for partnerships with other institutional units to increase efficiency or impact. Represent the institute in the national CTSA Consortium, particularly the Administrative Key Functions. Represent MICHR on behalf of the Faculty Director in a variety of fora as requested.

Operations:

Leadership and Institute Relations are expected to be the primary focus of this position. It is expected that MICHR will maintain dedicated operations, HR, and financial staff to conduct daily operations. However, this position will oversee the coordination of this work and maintain ultimate accountability for the operations of the institute. The Managing Director is ultimately accountable for administrative supervision over all staff positions in conjunction with the Faculty Director. Ensure appropriate, compliant expenditure of federal and institutional funds. Ensure efficient workflow, maintain accountability for relevant operational metrics. Address any concerns regarding compliance, customer satisfaction, or human resources issues as they arise.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Extensive experience (5+ years) in leadership and senior level management of a substantial and complex operation, including budgets, personnel, and development of strategic goals and metrics
  • Extensive experience with University and Medical School systems, particularly those relevant to research
  • Experience with and full understanding of clinical research; understanding of current research barriers and the needs of faculty and the institution in regards to accelerating research
  • Experience in planning, overseeing, writing, and managing large federal grants

About MICHR:

The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) seeks to enhance and enable clinical and translational research at the University of Michigan. MICHR serves investigators and trainees from the Schools of Medicine, Business, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as the College of Engineering and the Division of Kinesiology. Our education programs are currently supporting 57 intensive clinical research trainees, and reach more than 100 additional faculty and staff each year through short-term programs. MICHR's aims include creating an academic home for clinical and translational research; training the next generation of research teams; providing integrated research infrastructure; catalyzing new translational discoveries; and partnering with the national CTSA consortium. More than 200 faculty and almost 100 staff are working together in this effort to build clinical research resources and opportunities.
