Clinical Research Highlighted at "A New Era in Medicine" Symposium
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD presented, "High-Touch Medicine - The Physician-Patient Relationship in the Future" to hundreds of attendees
at a symposium jointly sponsored by the Taubman Research Institute and MICHR.
Dr. Emanuel, Chair of the NIH's Department of Bioethics and Special Advisor for Health Policy to the Obama administration, presented how the US spends the most on healthcare but is ranked 50th in quality of care, and other reasons he feels reform is necessary.
Other presenters included Ken Pienta, MD, who discussed the many programs and services MICHR offers clinical and translational researchers at U-M; David Pinsky, MD, who presented findings on ways to harness our natural defenses against atherosclerosis and stroke, and James Dowling, MD, PhD, talked about novel therapeutics for congenital
myopathies and the use of zebrafish in studying muscle.
Prior to the presentations, a poster session was held, highlighting the work of nearly 80 researchers from the Taubman Research Institute and MICHR. The presenters also served as judges, and later Eva Feldman, MD, PhD, and Director of the Taubman Institute presented awards for the best posters to:
