Nerve complications

Many people with diabetes experience problems with their nerves, which can be badly damaged by exposure to the effects of high blood sugar. U-M doctors check their diabetic patients regularly for the first signs that nerves in the feet or other parts of the body have suffered damage, called diabetic neuropathy.

Patients who have neuropathy can get skilled care from nerve specialists in the U-M Department of Neurology, through its Neuromuscular Clinic. Appointments are available by referral only.
