Title: Aging and Fecal Incontinence (Claude Pepper Center Study)
Condition Category: Obstetrics/Gynecology
Alternate Condition Category: Healthy Volunteer Studies
Study Description: Fecal incontinence is a condition where women accidentally leak bowel movements at inappropriate times. We will recruit 30 women for a Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center study to examine the effects of aging on the structure and function of the anal sphincter; study groups include: 10 younger women who have good bowel control, 10 older women who have good bowel control, and 10 older women who do not have good bowel control. The commitment involves two study visits to the University of Michigan Medical Campus in Ann Arbor, which will take approximately 1.5 hours each. Each participant will be asked to fill out a questionnaire, undergo clinical bowel tests, a brief pelvic exam, an ultrasound, and finally an MRI scan.
