Mission
The Michigan Bowel Control Program (MBCP) is a multidisciplinary
consultation service dedicated to the treatment of patients and
families affected by pelvic floor dysfunction and defecation disorders.
Participating departments include Colorectal Surgery, Gastroenterology,
Gynecology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Nursing, and Physical Therapy.
Their collaborative efforts facilitate dynamic and innovative approaches
to improve patient care. The MBCP offers a range of services from
integrated initial diagnostic evaluation, to recommendations for
treatment, to coordination of appropriate medical, behavioral, or
surgical therapy. The MBCP staff ensures patient access to educational
materials and experienced professionals to better understand medical
issues and possible treatment options. Multidisciplinary expertise
allows for the seamless integration of services. The ability to
perform and synthesize research offers patients the newest approaches
to medical treatment and surgical intervention. Research driven
outcome data allow for continuous quality improvement in providing
comprehensive care. Above all, we endeavor to improve quality of
life by improving bowel control in a currently underserved population.
Vision
The MBCP strives to become the leading multidisciplinary pelvic
floor disorder program in the nation through integrated consultative
services, provision of care, and ongoing patient-centered outcomes
research.
The multidisciplinary team is made up of gastroenterologists, urogynecologists,
colorectal surgeons, radiologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists,
nurses, and nutritionists who offer collaborative comprehensive
care for patients with these difficult problems. A multidisciplinary
approach is especially helpful for these conditions when complicated
by previous surgical intervention or pelvic floor trauma.
Our expert team strives to increase understanding of the physiology
of conditions, implement new therapies and technologies where indicated,
and improve treatment results for patients through ongoing clinical
trials and basic science research.
