The Michigan Bowel Control Program offers

  • Diagnostic testing completed quickly, with coordinated appointments to maximize convenience for the patient
  • Expertise in endoscopic procedures provided by gastroenterology physicians and colorectal surgeons
  • Specialized pelvic floor nerve and muscle testing in the GI Physiology Laboratory
  • UMHS surgeons with extensive operative experience in colorectal and urogynecological interventions
  • A comprehensive pelvic floor muscle strengthening and biofeedback program provided by physical therapists with clinic locations close to your home
  • Rapid reports to the patient’s primary care or referring physician

The multidisciplinary team is made up of gastroenterologists, urogynecologists, colorectal surgeons, radiologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, nurses, and nutritionists who offer collaborative comprehensive care for patients with these difficult problems. A multidisciplinary approach is especially helpful for these conditions when complicated by previous surgical intervention or pelvic floor trauma.

The MBCP brings together UMHS physicians and surgeons with expertise in the timely diagnosis and effective treatment of defecation disorders and other disorders of the posterior pelvic floor, including the following conditions:

  • constipation
  • rectocele
  • rectovaginal fistulas
  • rectal prolapse
  • pelvic organ prolapse (enterocele, cystocele, urethrocele, rectal prolapse, uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse)
