Valid Consent/Refusal to Participate in Research

This workshop has been specially designed for all research personnel who
obtain consent from human volunteers including:
- Faculty
and Staff
- Students
- Research Assistants
- Study Coordinators
- Principal Investigators
By the end of this workshop, attendees will:
- Understand why obtaining valid
consent from potential participants is important
- Know the components of valid consent
- Know the specific elements that comprise valid consent
- Know the meaning of (in the context of informed consent):
- High-risk research
- Vulnerable patients
- Emergency research
- Have been introduced to techniques that are useful to assure that consent
obtained is valid
- Know how to obtain valid informed consent from a potential participant
Course Curriculum:
The curriculum for this workshop is presented through multiple methods
to cover as many learning styles as possible. The material will be presented
through:
- Lecture that explains:
- Rationale behind obtaining valid consent
- Components of consent
- Small group exercise that shows how to:
- Obtain consent
- Evaluate competence
- Reveal conflicts
- Simulated Patient Instructors (SPIs) who will:
- Assess attendee's ability
- Provide feedback to attendee
- Assessment/Evaluation that will help attendees:
- Compare knowledge gains
- Measure satisfaction and usefulness of course
