Dr. Maria J. Silveira is a clinician scientist at the Ann Arbor Health Services Research and Developement Center of Excellence and assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on improving symptom management for patients with advanced illness through informal and formal caregiving. She has been the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Award, Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Scholar Award, and a VA Career Development Award. Her current research is funded by the Veterans Health Administration and is part of a larger program in Quality Improvement for Complex Chronic Conditions headed by Dr. John Piette.
Dr. Silveira proudly provides primary and palliative care to America's veterans through the Ann Arbor VA. She helps teach the University of Michigan's medical students and house staff about the practice of palliative medicine as well as the ethical and legal issues that arise for patients with advanced illness.
Dr. Silveira is a member of Michigan Governor Jennifer Grandholm's Committee on Pain and Symptom Management and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine's Public Policy Committee. In addition, she participates actively in the Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group and Society for General Internal Medicine.
