University of Michigan Adult Bariatric Surgery Program

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of body mass that is used to make the distinction between overweight and obesity. It is a measure of your weight relative to your height and may be used to assess the degree of excess weight. A BMI of 40 is approximately 100 pounds overweight.

To be considered for surgery at UMHS, you must have a BMI >= 40 or >= 35 in the presence of life threatening comorbidities. Please review program criteria.

Calculate your Body Mass Index by clicking on this link: http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm. You must know your height and weight.
