LAP-BAND® Surgical Procedure
LAP-BAND® surgery, also known as laparoscopic gastric banding, is a restrictive surgical procedure whereby the size of the opening from the esophagus to the stomach is reduced by a silicone band, decreasing the amount of food that can be comfortably eaten. The key component of the LAP-BAND procedure is its adjustability. Our surgeon adjusts the size of the opening by inflating or deflating the band via a port placed in the wall of the abdomen just beneath the skin. The band can be removed but this surgery should be considered as a permanent procedure. Lap-band procedures typically result in a loss of 35-45% of excess weight. Weight loss occurs more slowly than after gastric bypass, but because the procedure can be less invasive and can be removed if needed, it is an ideal option for many patients. |
