About Ann Arbor

Location
Ann Arbor is located on the banks of the Huron River in Southeastern Michigan. It sits roughly 40 miles west of Detroit and is only 25 minutes from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. (For map, click here). Chicago is a convenient getaway with Amtrack leaving Ann Arbor multiple times each day. With a population just over 100,000, Ann Arbor is the largest community in Washtenaw County.

Dining and Entertainment
Ann Arbor is known for its more than 200 great restaurants. From fine dining to casual cafes, there are exceptional dining choices that will satisfy any preference or mood. The Earle was rated Gourmet Magazine's #20 restaurant in 1998, while Zingerman's Delicatessen has been touted as the country's best deli. Ann Arbor hosts an annual WineFest, which is the largest wine auction outside of California.

Since Ann Arbor is a well-known college town, it attracts many of the best muscial and theatrical acts. Each January, Ann Arbor hosts the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, in its 32nd year, which brings artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Richie Havens, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and the Indigo Girls to town. The largest film festival of its kind, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, screens more than 100 films during six days. In summer, Ann Arbor comes alive with community events and fairs. During June and July, Top of the Park features outdoor bands, movie showings, food, and other entertainment. Perhaps most well-known is Ann Arbor's week long Art Fair in which the streets of Ann Arbor are transformed with booths displaying paintings, pottery, and other works.

A Great Place to Raise a Family
Ann Arbor is a wonderful place to raise a family. There are many places for family entertainment, such as the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, which contains more than 250 interactive science exhibits for children. Additionally, the parks system in Ann Arbor is extensive, and it includes places to canoe and hike, as well as several city pools.

The Ann Arbor Public School District is top-notch. 76% of the teaching staff hold a master's degree or above. The Ann Arbor school districts are among the best in Michigan and the nation. More generally, roughly 94% of people in Ann Arbor have a high school diploma, and two-thirds have four or more years of college. Ann Arbor's childcare and pre-schools are also equally as qualified and recognized for excellence.

Nature, Outdoor Recreation, and Sports
Ann Arbor is uniquely situated on the banks of the Huron River. Such access provides opportunities for canoeing, hiking, and picnicing. Parkland accounts for an astonishing 2,000 acres. Additionally, the University of Michigan operates both the Nichols Arboretum and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, which jointly provide over 475 acres of beautiful foliage and outdoor nature trails.

Of course, one cannot mention Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan without mentioning excellent athletic events. Michigan's Stadium remains the country's largest stadium and the energy in Ann Arbor on football Saturdays is unparalleled.
