Dr. O’Reilly’s research interests center on outcomes and patient safety.  As the Co-Medical Director of the University of Michigan’s Computerized Provider Order Entry system (UM Carelink, our implementation of the Eclipsys corporation CPOE system),  he participates in a number of projects to measure the impact of this system on medication safety and efficiency.  Dr. O’Reilly's current research is on how to improve patient safety and outcome by providing feedback to providers and to reduce the variability in care.  Dr. O’Reilly works closely with Amy Shanks and Michelle Morris, our department research associates devoted to clinical research in the Main operating rooms.

- The use of tactile alerts in the operating room (with Nadine Sarter, Ph.D. and Thomas Ferris, Ph.D. candidate in the School of Engineering)
- The impact of anesthesia care on surgical outcomes using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) database. (with Sachin Kheterpal, M.D., Skip Campbell, M.D., Amy Shanks and Michael Englesbe, M.D)
