Anesthesiology Medical Student Preceptor Program (click to visit website)
The 2008 Department of Anesthesiology Summer Medical Student Research Preceptorship program is designed for University of Michigan medical students who have completed one year of medical school and are in good academic standing. This program pairs medical students with a faculty preceptor to work on a research program, either clinical or basic science. Working closely with a faculty preceptor provides medical students with an opportunity to gain research experience and exposure to academic anesthesiology via research and didactic experiences with the University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology faculty.
Clinical research projects include both indirect patient contact (e.g. chart reviews and survey research) or direct patient contact (e.g. informed consent) in general anesthesiology and its subspecialties. Basic science research projects include drug metabolism, stem cell developmental biology, neurobiology of sleep and anesthesia, and control of breathing. Medical students are encouraged to present their data at the Department of Anesthesiology Research Conference. Students learn how to prepare abstracts, papers, and give oral presentations. Many students have submitted abstracts to the Midwest Anesthesiology Residents' Conference (MARC) and have made oral and poster presentations.

Resident Clinical Scientist Track (click for more information)
We are initiating an optional program for residents who are committed to an academic career in Anesthesiology. To apply for this program, residents must express their interest to the Program Director and the Department Chair. Residents will need to identify a mentor and a project. The Associate Chairs for Research will assist in this process. The track is limited to two residents per year at the current time.
