Department of Anesthesiology- Research Division
Resident Clinical Scientist Track

We are initiating an optional program for residents who are committed to an academic career in Anesthesiology. This program is specifically intended for residents have already decided they will be taking subspecialty fellowships and who are planning for a career in academic anesthesiology.

To assist in initiating the research component of their academic career, residents will be allocated research in the form of 10% research over a period of three to six months, which will be renewable, given that the residents are productive in their projects. Each month residents participating in the research track will be allocated two academic days per month with the expectation this will continue for six months. At the end of three months, residents will need to provide a progress report.

To apply for this elective, residents must submit a research proposal, co-authored with a faculty mentor. This proposal does not need to be long, but must include the goals and objectives, the question to be asked, and the appropriate references. This should be submitted to Dr. Alan Tait with copies to Dr. Ted Sanford and Dr. Kevin Tremper.

These proposals will be reviewed and ranked and the top ranking proposals will receive research time. These proposals will also be critiqued and the submitting resident will be given reviews of the proposal. If not accepted the first time, the proposal may be revised and resubmitted. These submissions may be resubmitted quarterly. Research time that has been committed to current PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents will continue as committed. For scheduling purposes, residents must submit proposals a minimum of three months prior to the initiation of the research elective.

The following criteria apply to this rotation:
  1. The resident must develop a research project plan with a mentor which briefly describes the project in abstract form, including the resources required and the deliverables upon completion of that project. The proposal should be between two and three pages in length and should include:

    1. Goals of the project.
    2. Brief background of project.
    3. Hypothesis and project aims.
    4. Expected data and outcomes.
    5. Deliverables, abstract, submission to regional/national meeting.

The meeting to which the work should ultimately be submitted depends on the timing of the rotation. All work must be presented in the Department and at an external meeting. Expectations are that all work should result in a peer-reviewed publication.

  2. All research electives must be approved by the Resident Research Committee, which is composed of the Chair, Program Director, Director of Clinical Research, and the Associate Chair for Research. Proposals should be submitted by March 1st for the subsequent academic year. Approval for research rotations will be provided by April 1st.
