Dr. Green received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan. She received a M.D. from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Honor Medical Society and did an internship in Internal Medicine. After completing a residency in Anesthesiology with subspecialty training in Ambulatory and Obstetrical Anesthesiology, she did a fellowship in Pain Management at the University of Michigan Multidisciplinary Pain Center.  She also did a fellowship in health services research at the Association of American Medical Colleges' (AAMC) Health Services Research Institute, and was selected to participate in the National Institute of Aging's Summer Research Institute. Dr. Green, an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, was awarded tenure in 2003 (the first African American to do so) and her tenure package was highlighted to The University of Michigan Regents.

Dr. Green is principal investigator for the Michigan Pain Outcomes Study Team (M-POST), an Attending Physician in the Multidisciplinary Pain Center, Director of the Health Disparities Research Program for the Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research, and Director for the Dissemination and Health Policy Core for the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research. She is the former medical director for the Acute Pain Service, founding chair of the Pain Management Steering Committee (institutional lead for pain), former chair of the Medical Affairs Advisory Committee to the Executive Vice-President for Medical Affairs, and former member of the University of Michigan President's Violence Against Women Task Force.

Dr. Green served on the American Society of Anesthesiologists' (ASA) Committee on Pain Management, as faculty for both the AAMC's Junior Women and Minority Faculty Career Development Seminars, the ASA Committee on Professional Diversity, ASA Committee on Practice Parameters, and Task Force for updating Practice Guidelines for Acute Pain Management in the Perioperative Setting. She is an active member of several scientific organizaitons, founding chair of the American Pain Society's Special Interest Group for Pain and Disparities, serves on the editorial board for Pain Medicine and The Journal of Pain, and was guest editor for Pain Medicine's first special issue on disparities in pain care.

Dr. Green is on the Institute of Medicine's Health Care Services Board, Center Healthcare Research and Transformation Board, SafeHouse Center's Board, and is an elected member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists. Dr. Green's health services research agenda focuses on pain management outcomes, physician decision-making, and access to care. She has spoken widely on disparities due to age, race, gender, and class, structural barriers to health, physician variability in decision-making, and health policy.
