Dr. Green received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan. She received a M.D. from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Honor Medical Society and did an internship in Internal Medicine. After completing a residency in Anesthesiology with subspecialty training in Ambulatory and Obstetrical Anesthesiology, she did a fellowship in Pain Management at the University of Michigan Multidisciplinary Pain Center.  She also did a fellowship in health services research at the Association of American Medical Colleges' (AAMC) Health Services Research Institute, and was selected to participate in the National Institute of Aging's Summer Research Institute. Dr. Green, an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, was awarded tenure in 2003 (the first African American to do so) and her tenure package was highlighted to The University of Michigan Regents. She is principal investigator for the M-POST and Associate Director for the Investigator Core for the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research.

Dr. Green is an Attending Physician in the Multidisciplinary Pain Center, and serves on the Department of Anesthesiology's Education and Research Committee. Administratively, Dr. Green serves as Medical Director for the Acute Pain Service within the Department of Anesthesiology Multidisciplinary Pain Center. Dr. Green was the founding Chair of the Pain Management Steering Committee as well as the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) Institutional Lead for the JCAHO Pain Initiative. She has previously chaired the Medical Affairs Advisory Committee to the Executive Vice-President of Medical Affairs and was a member of the University of Michigan President's Violence Against Women Task Force. Dr. Green developed and directs the Medical Student (M1) Anesthesiology Summer Research Preceptorship at the University of Michigan (a program designed to provide clinical and research exposure to anesthesiology for medical students). Additionally, she is Associate Director for the Medical Student Education Anesthesiology Clerkship and Departmental Coordinator for the Midwest Anesthesia Residents' Conference.

Dr. Green has served on the American Society of Anesthesiologists'(ASA)Committee on Pain Management, the American Pain Society's Annual Meeting Committee, and as faculty for both the AAMC's Junior Women and Minority Faculty Career Development Seminars. She has previously served on the ASA Committee on Professional Diversity, ASA Committee on Practice Parameters, Task Force for updating Practice Guidelines for Acute Pain Management in the Perioperative Setting and is a member of many scientific organizations. She is an active member of several scientific organizations including the American Pain Society, American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Green is the founding chair for the American Pain Society's Special Interest Group for Pain and Disparities. Dr. Green has served as a reviewer for several national and international scientific journals, NIH and is on the editorial board for Pain Medicine and the Journal of Pain. She is the guest editor for Pain Medicine's special issue on disparities in pain care. She has spoken widely on disparities in pain care and physician variability in pain management decision-making.

Dr. Green has received a number of honors for her community service and work including Employee of the Year for the UMMC in 1993, Woman of Color of the Year for Human Relations (UM) in 1999, Consumer Checkbook as Top 100 Doctors in 2002-2004, 2005-2006, and received the Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award (UM) in 2002. She is on the Board of Directors for the National Pain Foundation, Community Dental Center, and Michigan Visiting Nurses.

In October 2003, Dr. Green was invited to participate in a conference on "Narrative Pain and Suffering" at the internationally renowned Rockefeller Center Foundation's Bellagio Conference in Bellagio Italy. In 2004, she was selected to participate in the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program and was selected as an inaugural fellow for the Mayday Pain and Society Fellowship.  

Dr. Green's health services research agenda focuses on 1) racial, ethnic, age, gender, and social stratification variables on pain management outcomes; 2) quality of life and outcomes for patients with acute, cancer, and chronic pain; 3) physician variability in pain management decision-making; 4) quality of care and access to pain management; and 5) graduate and continuing medical education in pain management.
