Department of Anesthesiology Summer Preceptorship Program

Several years ago Dr. Carmen R. Green, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology designed and coordinated a preceptorship program for first and second year medical students. During the first year of the program, six medical students enrolled for a six-week period. Over the years the preceptorship program has grown considerably. Last summer, 13 students participated in an 8-week program. Students worked 40 hours a week in paid positions as anesthesia technicians/research assistants. This allowed preclinical students to interact with anesthesiology faculty and residents in the operating rooms and to learn about the anesthesia set up. The students participated in a number of research projects throughout the department. The students were involved in data collection in clinical and laboratory studies. The preceptorship program has been well received by all involved and will be offered again in the summer of 2000.
