The seventy-third meeting of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) was held in March at the Century Plaza Hotel in the sunny (but not so warm) Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles. The U-M Department of Anesthesiology was well represented with eight poster and/or poster-discussion presentations.
The presentations were as follows:
Carmen Green, M.D., (with Drs. Shobha Malviya, Julie Golembiewski, PharmD, Heather Flowe-Valencia, Carrie Wright, and Norah Naughton, M.D.) presented "Utilizing Continuous Quality Improvement to Evaluate the Efficacy and Role of Intra-operative Antiemetics in the Prevention of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting."
Wei Lau, M.D., (with Drs. Green, Gary Faerber, Alan Tait, Ph.D., and Julie Golembiewski) presented "Determination of the Effective Therapeutic Dose of Intrathecal Sufentanil for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy With Minimal Side Effects."
Shobha Malviya, M.D., (with Terri Voepel-Lewis, R.N., M.S.N., Alan Tait, Ph.D., M. Dipietro, G. Prochaska and P. Eldevik) presented "Sedation for MRI and CT Procedures in Children: Recovery and Adverse Events Following Discharge."
Terri Voepel-Lewis, R.N., M.S.N., (with Drs. Tait, G. Prochaska and Malviya) presented "Sedation Failures in Children Undergoing MRI and CT: Is Temperament a Factor?"
Jeremy Lieberman, M.D., (with S. Tammineedi, and Jan Aukerman) presented "Comparison of a Centrifugal Pump With a Peristaltic Roller Pump During Cardiopulmonary Bypass: Effects on Blood Hemolysis and Coagulation."
Sheena Gormley, M.D., (with M. Armstrong, I. Young, T. McMurray and W. Mc Bride) presented "Urinary IL-1ra Concentrations Correlate With Renal Proximal Tubular Dysfunction During Cardiac Surgery."
Jaideep Pandit, M.D., (with Drs. I. Doug McLaren, and Bruce Crider) discussed "Superficial or Combined Deep and Superficial Cervical Plexus Block for Carotid Endarterectomy."
Jaideep Pandit, M.D., (with A. Burghley and P. Robbins) also presented "Respiratory Effects of Breathing High Oxygen During Incremental Exercise: Implications for Ventilatory Control."
Although it was readily apparent that without an agent, sunglasses, and a permanently embedded cell phone, none of us were likely to "make it big" in Hollywood, all presentations received a definite "two thumbs up." Indeed, Dr. Lieberman's responses to questions regarding his presentation were so good that he was invited to be a contestant on Jeopardy. Stay tuned!
