1999 ASA Alumni Reception

By Katherine Loberg, Academic Secretary III, Anesthesiology Department

The Department hosted its yearly Alumni Reception at the 1999 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in Dallas, Texas. The reception was held at the Adam's Mark Hotel on October 9th. Alumni from New Jersey, Missouri, Texas, Arizona, California, and several other regions of the country reunited to share memories, catch up with old friends, and learn how the University’s residency program has evolved. Guests of the reception included Dr. Peter Cohen, a former U-M Department of Anesthesiology chair, a visiting professor from Belfast, and several current faculty members. The first 50 alumni to arrive at the reception received a free University of Michigan 150-year Commemorative tee shirt. A video produced by the medical school which highlighted great moments and people in the medical school’s history were also available for viewing.

After speaking with several of the guests, I noted that many alumni are dedicated to humanitarianism alongside the art of medicine. For example, one alumnus volunteers his vacation time to work with a “flying hospital” team to provide free health care to patients in India and Russia. He plans to fly to the Dominican Republic, but needs to learn Spanish to prepare for the trip. His desire to learn another language so that he can communicate with patients is proof of his commitment to patient care. Several physicians spoke of different aspects of their medical practices and emphasized the value of placing patient care above all other facets of medicine. Knowing that our department produces anesthesiologists who truly value their patient's quality of life gives me a greater respect for the medical education we provide to our residents.

The reception included taco and fajita bars, which gave all the guests an authentic taste of Tex-Mex cuisine. Overall, attendees had a wonderful time reminiscing about old times and learning about the current activities of the Department.
