1998 Holiday Party

By Donna Turner

A winter wind was blowing along State Street but the atmosphere in the Michigan Union was warm and inviting as several hundred Medical Center employees and their guests ate, drank, danced, and mingled at the Department of Anesthesiology’s Annual Holiday Party on Saturday, December 19, 1998. Jenny Mace explains that each year the Department “tries to make the Ballroom as warm and festive as possible. There is always a fire in the fireplace and a Christmas tree somewhere.” This year, candlelight, decorations, and burgundy and gold linens adorned sitting tables in the Ballroom for the benefit of those who clung to the conga line until the wee hours of the morning (assisted by DJ Dorian Deaver of Dazz Dance Productions).

For guests who preferred that their taste buds did the dancing, the selection of food presented on long tables at each end of the Ballroom accommodated a wide range of tastes. The menu consisted of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres (including over 175 pounds of cold jumbo shrimp), assorted desserts and fruit, and flavored coffees. Staff at two bars served alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Down the hallway from the Ballroom, The Pendelton Room was also decorated for the party and included a cozy fire and a “tree” made of stacked poinsettias. Here, Kimberling’s Trio, a string group led by Nathan Peters, created a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. The food selection in this area included cheese and crackers, vegetables and dip, assorted desserts, and a bar.

For this year’s holiday celebration, the Department invited over 1,300 Medical Center employees from all Clinical Departments. This list included Anesthesiology faculty, residents, and staff, all operating room and recovery room personnel, Hospital Administration, medical students who had rotated through the Department in the past year, OR Pharmacists, and the computer support personnel who service Anesthesiology. The turnout was roughly one-third of that number; enough to make an impressive conga line.

The Department looks forward to an even larger showing this coming December (black tie optional). Join us! After all, we’ll be partying like it’s…well, 1999.
