Martin Norton, M.D. Retires

A retirement reception held last July is by no means the end of the Difficult Airway Clinic or the last of the numerous lectures, writings and opinions given by Martin L. Norton, M.D., J.D. In fact, the second edition of his book, the Atlas of the Difficult Airway is scheduled to hit the bookstores in 1995.

Martin Norton, M.D, J.D.

Dr. Norton was a professor of Anesthesiology from 1982 to July 1, 1994 and an associate professor of Otorhinolaryngology since 1984. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Section of Arbitration and Mediation, and is co-chair of the health arbitration subcommittee, section of dispute resolution. He is responsible for directing the highly successful courses: Interdisciplinary Laser Surgery Course (1985, 1986 and 1987); and the Difficult Airway Clinic (1988 to 1992). The keys to successful meetings are personal effort, the quality of topics taught, and the meeting location, Dr. Norton says. His laser surgery course attracted 80 to 100 students from all disciplines of medicine, for one full week each year, and was the biggest and most prominent course in the country on the subject at the time.

Dr. Norton is the founder of the Difficult Airway Clinic and directed the clinic courses on the topic three times each year, once each in Michigan, Florida, and Arizona. He is now a consultant for the clinic and will continue to teach the course with Dr. Allan Brown, through the Towsley Center for Continuing Medical Education.

The doctor is finishing up writing the second edition to the Atlas of the Difficult Airway-, to be published by Mosby/Year Book Company. The new edition is almost triple the size of the first edition. Dr. Norton is also author of four other books including "High Intensity Care Units: Medical, Administrative and Legal Aspects", a book written by Drs. Norton and Jay Finch, and Dr. Norton's son, Edward V. Norton. He has lectured at Johns Hopkins, Northwestern University, Chicago University, and in England, Israel, Thailand, Mexico and Peru.

Dr. Norton continues to be active in administration, peer review, arbitration, and mediation as a private consultant. He would like to give special recognition to Dr. Charles Krause of Otolaryngology, and says he enjoyed particularly working with Drs. Peter Cohen and Finch.
