The Sujit and Uma Pandit Lectureship in Anesthesiology

By: Kevin K. Tremper, PhD, MD

Uma and Suit Pandit

In October of 2001 the Department of Anesthesiology sponsored a dinner honoring the combined 90 years in medicine and 50 years of service that Drs. Sujit and Uma Pandit have devoted to the University of Michigan. At that dinner, Dr. Kevin Tremper announced that an endowment had been initiated for a Sujit and Uma Pandit Lectureship to support Visiting Distinguished Faculty that come to the University of Michigan and lecture on the fields of Pediatric and Ambulatory Anesthesia. An endowed lectureship at the University requires $150,000.00 in donations. Within one month (even prior to a formal campaign being organized) donations were arriving. Drs. Paul Reynolds and Shobha Malviya were the faculty who organized the dinner in addition to volunteering to spearhead the fund raising campaign. To date, donations have been received from 36 individuals and organizations totaling $70,351.00.

Of note the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) has donated $5,000.00 and has requested that we publish an announcement in their upcoming newsletter.

We are proud that Uma and Sujit have chosen to dedicate the majority of their career to the University of Michigan. In addition to their productive investigative efforts Sujit and Uma have been dedicated educators and clinicians who have always kept the care of their patients their primary concern. At the same time they have both been recognized as kind and considerate teachers to the many residents and students who have worked under their supervision.

The department is very grateful for the contributions of Sujit and Uma, not only to our department, but also to academic and clinical anesthesia around the world. We are also very grateful to the generosity of those who have contributed toward this lectureship. Our goal was to complete this lectureship within several years but at the current rate that may be accomplished sooner.

The first Pandit Distinguished Lecturer was Dr. Rafaat Hannallah, Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics, George Washington University Medical Center, and Chairman of Anesthesiology, Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC who visited Ann Arbor on April 17-18, 2002 and lectured on "Pediatric Ambulatory Anesthesia".
