The statement, “It was a dark and stormy day”, has been known to begin a mystery novel of some sort. This year it could describe the conditions for the 9th Annual GasMaster’s Golf Outing.

Registrants for the June 2nd golf outing awoke to steady rain that continued throughout the morning. Despite the rain, 90% of the field came out to Reddeman Farms Golf Club, in Chelsea Michigan, hoping to play. It did not happen. What did happen was everyone enjoyed a continental breakfast and each other’s company until approximately noon, when the Outing was officially called and rescheduled to July 28, 2001.

July 28 was a beautiful day that more than made up for the wait. Registrants checked in between 6:30 am and 7:00 am to receive their hole assignments, eat breakfast and (for those interested) get some practice swings in at the range or putting on the green.

Once all team members were registered and at their carts Dr. Timothy Rutter, the chairman of the outing, and Patty McCarthy, owner of Reddeman Farms, greeted them. After a brief overview of the rules of play, everyone was dispatched to their assigned holes to await the “shotgun” siren announcing play was underway.

Over the rolling, tranquil course the sounds of nature were often broken by the sounds of laughter, jeering and the occasional yells of joy after an excellent shot. One such shot occurred on the Par 3 – Hole # 3 for Paul Salow, the Clinical Department Administrator for the Department of Anesthesiology. The third hold was originally set as the ‘Closest to the Pin’ hole for the men, but Paul chose that hole for his first Hole in One. For this he received, not only the Closest to the Pin trophy, but also a complimentary Hole in One trophy from Reddeman Farms. Congratulations Paul!

At the end of the regulation play, 18 holes, everyone returned to the clubhouse to turn in their score cards and compare their standings to the other teams. Refreshments and a delicious buffet lunch were provided for all the golfers after their morning on the links. At the end of the meal the team standings were announced and trophies were presented.

The GasMaster’s Golf Outing is always an enjoyable day of friends, food and challenging golf play. Reddeman Farms has always been a wonderful host to the Outing. This year will be the 10th Annual GasMaster’s Golf Outing and plans are underway to make it a memorable one. It will be Saturday, June 1st, 2002. If interested in playing in the next outing, get your team together and contact, Barb Hammond, Department of Anesthesiology. (Phone: 734-936-9479 or Email: Barbhamm@umich.edu)
