It is rare for a physician to have an article in Science let alone the cover article. To my knowledge this March issue of Science is the first time an anesthesiologist has ever been published in this prestigious journal. Dr. Csete's article co-authored by her husband John Doyle describes the complexity of biology and how it is being approached by the complexity of engineering. They draw an analogy between the building blocks of biologic systems and how they are used to develop complex organisms in the same way the child’s toy Legos can be used to produce an unlimited number of structures. A closer look at the cover reveals that the spiraling structure in the middle is composed of Legos.
Dr. Csete is also on the cover of this month’s Medicine at Michigan along with her colleagues’ stem cell researchers at Michigan. This exciting work is bursting at the seams and eagerly awaits the completion of the new Medical Science Research Building, which had its ground breaking this spring.
