Our Anesthesia: Focus 2000 Conference in Copper Mountain, Colorado was a better than expected success with 38 participants. The course updated anesthesiologists on vital clinical topics for the new millennium. Highlighting the inaugural conference was visiting professor, Steven, J. Barker, Professor and Chair from the University of Arizona Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Barker presented lectures on Anesthesia for Trauma, Pulse Oximetry, Monitoring of Ventilation and Clinical Acid/Base Physiology. In addition to Dr. Barker’s topics, Doctors Kevin K. Tremper, Patrick Benedict, Loren Levy, Paul Reynolds, R. Anthony Cueto, Linda Polley, Jeffrey Rosenthal, and Sarah Walton presented talks on a broad range of fascinating and clinically related topics.
The participants, presenters, and their families also enjoyed a cozy “Welcome Reception” where comfortable conversation flowed. However, the highlight of the conference was the NASTAR Racing event. (NASTAR is a downhill ski race where participants are timed from the starting block with turns through numerous gates until the end of the course). The "Anesthesia Race" included 35 participants and family members of Anesthesia: Focus 2000. The group assembled at the NASTAR Racing site on the mountain and competed against each other with the best times receiving “medals”. This race generated enthusiasm and excitement to participants as an enjoyable ski racing experience.
