Neuroanesthesiology
The mission of the Division of Neuroanesthesiology is:
·
To provide outstanding and compassionate perioperative care to
patients presenting for neurosurgical interventions.
·
To facilitate the care of the critically ill in the
Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.
·
To educate medical students, residents, and fellows in the art
and science of neuroanesthesiology.
·
To advance both the clinical and scientific knowledge of
neuroanesthesiology through research.
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan is well
respected and attracts a wide variety of complex patients. Common
neurosurgical problems include intracranial aneurysms, brain tumors,
diseases of the spine, epilepsy and other functional disorders, peripheral
nerve injuries, and hydrocephalus.
Excellent
anesthetic care is critical to the outcome of neurosurgery and there are
several faculty who specialize in this area of clinical management. George
Mashour, MD, PhD is the Director of Neuroanesthesiology and conducts both
clinical and basic neuroscience research. The faculty members of this
division include Alexandra Bullough, MD, David Healy,MD, Ellen Janke, MD,
Laurel Moore, MD, Paul Smythe, MD, and Christopher Turner, MD, PhD. Many of
our faculty are fellowship-trained in neuroanesthesiology or critical care;
Dr. Mashour and Dr. Moore are also attending faculty in the Neurosurgical
Intensive Care Unit. Satwant Samra, MD is an Emeritus Professor and
former Director who is still involved in the research mission of the
Division.
