Acute Pain Service: |
The Adult Acute Pain Service (APS)The Anesthesiology Department at the University of Michigan offers a full-time service for the evaluation and management of hospitalized patients who have acute and other pain problems. While most of the patients referred to the service are postoperative, we also manage patients suffering from such diseases as cancer, pancreatitis, sickle cell crisis and various ischemic problems. We offer management of intravenous (IV) patient controlled analgesia (PCA), as well as epidural analgesia, and peripheral nerve catheters i.e. local anesthetic infusions through catheters placed in other areas. We also provide consultations for patients with acute exacerbation of chronic pain problems. The APS functions 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Formal rounds with faculty take place on all patients each day. An acute pain nurse, house officer, and faculty anesthesiologist are on call each night for pain management issues that arise.
