Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology
The University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology
offers a fellowship-training program (CA-IV year) in Pediatric
Anesthesiology. This fellowship has been accredited by the ACGME. Fellows in
pediatric anesthesiology at Mott Children's Hospital gain experience in the
management of difficult pediatric cases including complex congenital hear
disease by providing anesthesia services for, on average over 50 - 75
pediatric open heart surgical cases. In addition, fellows can expect to be
involved in the care of approximately 30 neonates undergoing surgical
procedures including TEF, CDH and omphalocele repairs during the CA-IV year.
A didactic lecture series given by the pediatric
anesthesia faculty to the fellows, residents and medical students provides a
solid background education in the preoperative, intraoperative and
postoperative management of infants and children including physiology,
regional anesthesia and fluid management. Involvement in ongoing research
projects and encouragement in designing and developing new research projects
helps to foster interest in research in pediatric anesthesiology during the
CA-IV year. Fellows are encouraged to participate in the yearly Midwest
Anesthesia Research Conference (MARC). Participation on the Pediatric Acute
and Chronic Pain Service helps to complete the experience during the
fellowship year.
