Supported Projects

MADRC resources have been provided for the following projects:

Home Based Assessment (HBA) – an observational study aimed at developing more efficient and sensitive home based testing methods for elderly subjects who could potentially develop memory problems and Alzheimer's disease. The study will evaluate cognitively healthy older adults using one of three different in-home assessment methods to serve as a comparison with traditional in-clinic assessments. Recruitment closed.

Single visit trial to collect memory test information, blood and urine from healthy adults – a study run in conjunction with Pfizer, Inc. Blood and urine samples and memory test results are collected from healthy older adults to be compared with samples and tests collected from people who have Alzheimer’s disease. Recruitment closed .

Feasibility of an adapted Tai Chi home training program and its effects on elders with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers (Tai Chi) – a study that is testing the feasibility of a caregiver assisted Tai Chi fall risk reduction program and exploring its effects on older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and their family caregivers. Study is currently enrolling.

A pilot study to explore ways to help improve personal memory and quality of caregiver - care recipient relationship.  This study, Recapturing Personal History in Dementia, is investigating how the development of memory aids about the person's life might help individuals with dementia to retain personal identity information.  The pilot study includes home visits to work with couples to develop memory aids over a period of weeks. Study is currently enrolling.

Study of Remarried Spouse Caregivers
University of Michigan researchers are conducting a study on the Alzheimer’s caregiving experiences of spouses who are in a late-life remarriage (‘second marriage’).  Researchers are seeking to recruit 100 remarried  caregivers whose spouse has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia .  Interviews with caregivers will be conducted by telephone and scheduled at their convenience.  Interviews will ask survey and open-ended questions and will take approximately 2 hours to complete.   Participants will be compensated for their time.  Participation is completely voluntary and all information will be kept strictly confidential.  This study is funded by the Alzheimer’s Association and approved by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board.   For more information, please contact  Dr. Carey W.
