Observational Studies
REVEAL (Risk Evaluation and Education for Alzheimer's Disease) Study

Project Description: This study will explore the impact of incorporating genetic testing into a risk assessment program for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Participants will be randomized to one of two groups. Participants in the intervention group will receive risk information based on their age, the diagnosis of MCI and their APOE genotype, while participants in the comparison group will receive risk information based on their MCI diagnosis and age alone.
Participation criteria: Individuals diagnosed with amnestic-MCI, ages 55-90. A study partner is required (i.e. close friend, relative, or spouse).

Effects of an Alert Maintenance Task on Driving Performances: A Simulation Study

Project description: This study involves the use of a computerized driving simulator to find out if engaging in a simple game-like task could promote alertness and improved driving performance in fatigued older drivers. The study will take place in 2 separate sessions that will last approximately 2 hours each. Participants will be compensated for their time spent in the study.
Participation criteria: Over the age of 55; valid driver’s license over the past 2 years and driving in past 6 months.

Couples Life Story Project

Project description: During this project, participants will discuss their lives together as a couple and make a Couple Life Story Book. This process will be used to help couples think about positive memories and work on communication techniques.
Participation criteria: One person in the couple with memory loss; MMSE between 15-27 or expressed memory concerns.

Neuroimaging Studies

Project description: Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative Grand Opportunity. This longitudinal imaging study will look at the usefulness of brain imaging and other biological tests (biomarkers) in detecting Alzheimer’s disease and its progression. Information will be collected and stored in this study to help researchers design future studies to identify and treat Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage.
Participation criteria: Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease; over the age of 55. A study partner is required.

Sense of Smell
PI: Nicolaas Bohnen, MD, PhD
Project description: The main purpose of this study is to determine whether a decrease in the sense of smell may be associated with progression of cognitive difficulties and may reflect a decrease of the brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine (a chemical messenger between nerve cells) or increased amyloid depositions (Alzheimer’s disease “plaques”). The study will perform clinical testing including evaluations of the sense of smell, memory, and the ability to solve problems and concentrate. An imaging procedure called positron emission tomography (PET) will be used to measure acetylcholine and amyloid in the brain. This study will perform clinical and PET imaging testing at study entry and at 2-year follow-up. In addition, limited annual testing of clinical, smell, and memory tests will also be performed.
Participation Criteria: Persons with mild cognitive impairment or mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease 50 years or older are eligible to participate in this study. Must be willing and able to undergo PET and MRI scans and comply with study requirements. Other criteria apply and additional eligibility screening will be performed prior to study participation. We recommend bringing a partner to the study procedures.

FEOBV investigational PET tracer study
PI: Kirk Frey, PhD and Myria Petrou
Project Description: New investigational study looking at vesicular ACh transporter intended to provide initial evidence for possible further development. Study will initially look at normal controls undergoing PET scanning (completed).
Participation criteria: Patients with DLB, PDD and possibly AD or related disorders to undergo PET scanning, brain MRI and memory testing.
