Supported Projects

MADRC resources have been provided for the following projects:

Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) – a brain imaging study conducted to determine whether brain imaging can predict the onset of brain disease and monitor the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Recruitment closed.

Patterns of Brain Activation with Impaired Emotional Facial Perception in Depression and Related Psychological and Neurological Disorders - a study of the cognitive and neurobiological sequelae of depression across the age range.  The goal is to increase understanding of the interactions among cognitive, endocrine, and neural mechanisms during depression, and how these relationships might change as people age. Currently enrolling

A randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial of the effects of Docosahexaenoic Acid in slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (DHA) – a study to test the effectiveness of DHA, a substance found in fish oil, on slowing the cognitive and functional decline of people with mild to moderate dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. Recruitment closed.

Nonlinear dynamical analysis of EEG and biomarkers of dementia (EEG) – a study to see whether persons with different types of dementia have different patterns of brain activity measured by an EEG than persons of the same age and gender who have normal cognitive function. Currently enrolling

A phase II, multi-center, open-label, long-term treatment study to determine the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of AAB-001 (ELN115727) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease who participated in study AAB-001-201 or ABB-001-202 – an open-label trial investigating the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of AAB-001 in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.  Recruitment closed.

Identification of pre-symptomatic cognitive impairment: a comparison of computerized versus traditional neuropsychological screening methods (Gift of Knowledge – Cogstate) – a study that is evaluating, brief, well-tolerated, standardized and inexpensive screening techniques that improve the prediction of progressive decline in memory or other cognitive difficulties in healthy older individuals. Recruitment closed.

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study to investigate the effects of rosiglitazone (extended release tablets) on cerebral glucose utilization and cognition in subjects with mild to moderate Alzheimer's Disease (GSK) – a study to investigate the full effects of a 12-month course of rosiglitazone extended release tablets (Rosiglitazone XR) on cerebral glucose metabolism and cognitive performance in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. The primary objective is to compare changes in cerebral glucose metabolism in subjects receiving a 12-month course of Rosiglitazone XR to those receiving placebo, including the time course of any changes. Recruitment closed.

Pathogenesis and Diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) – a study to learn more about the environmental and genetic (hereditary) factors that contribute to the development of MSA and to learn more about the natural history of the disease. Recruitment closed.

A multi-center trial to evaluate home-based assessment methods for Alzheimer’s disease prevention research in people over 75 years old (HBA) – an observational study aimed at developing more efficient and sensitive home based testing methods for elderly subjects who could potentially develop memory problems and Alzheimer's disease. The study will evaluate cognitively healthy older adults using one of three different in-home assessment methods to serve as a comparison with traditional in-clinic assessments.  Currently enrolling

In Vivo Amyloid Measures in MCI (PIB) – an experimental brain imaging study to investigate the relationships of memory to brain chemistry and nerve activity. Recruitment closed.

A multi-site, cross-sectional, non-treatment, perspective trial to collect bio-fluids and neuropsychiatric data from cognitively normal elderly subjects (Pfizer) – a study run in conjunction with Pfizer, Inc. Blood and urine samples and memory test results are collected from healthy older adults to be compared with samples and tests collected from people who have Alzheimer’s disease. Currently enrolling

Feasibility of an adapted Tai Chi home training program and its effects on elders with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers (Tai Chi) – a study that is testing the feasibility of a caregiver assisted Tai Chi fall risk reduction program and exploring its effects on older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and their family caregivers. Currently enrolling

Cognitive interference of gait in older individuals and Alzheimer’s patients – a study aimed at understanding the effects of age and disease on the mobility of older adults.  Recruitment closed.

Capacity to appoint a proxy for research consent – a study investigating ethical implications of understanding the capacity of persons with dementia and the role of third-party decision makers regarding treatment and research decisions.  Recruitment closed.
