Research Council for Complementary, Alternative, Holistic and Integrative Healthcare

On April 2, 2004, an introductory meeting of the Research Council for Complementary, Alternative, Holistic and Integrative Healthcare (MIHRC) was held in the Maternal Child Health Auditorium. Over 50 faculty members were in attendance from various academic disciplines ranging from biostatistics to environmental studies. The group was addressed by Daniel Clauw, MD a Professor of Internal Medicine in the division of Rheumatology as well as Director, Center for the Advancement of Clinical Research. He spoke about his group’s research using acupuncture for treating chronic pain and highlighted the resources available at the University of Michigan for conducting clinical research. The meeting participants then broke into groups focusing on various areas of complementary and alternative healthcare research including herbal medicine, whole system research, and mind-body approaches to healing.

Based on feedback from the initial meeting, we anticipate that that the MIHRC will promote the development of a comprehensive structure and network for CAHIH research at the University of Michigan. For example, the MIHRC could help to identify and obtain seed funding for pilot research, leverage resources for common infrastructure needs (e.g. core botanical laboratory,) and connect research mentors with mentees. In addition, the MIHRC will facilitate grant writing, discussion about CAHIH methodology, presentation of findings, and review of CAHIH research proposals.
