    MHG    (Multicultural Health Generalization)

Although the following information may apply to some individuals, this is not to infer these are beliefs and/or practices of the majority of this population.

When using this information/tool, please keep in mind the following definitions:
Stereotype - ending point.  When stereotyping, one makes an assumption about a                person based on group membership without learning whether or not that individual               fits the assumption.
Generalization - starting point.  When generalizing, one begins with an assumption               about a group but then seeks further information about whether the assumption fits
     that individual.

  MFit and PEOC

MFit Health Promotion Division of UMHS and the Patient Education Oversight Committee (PEOC) play a large role in patient education. MFit programs and services are dedicated to educating, motivating, and empowering individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices through medically-based personalized health and wellness programs and services.  MFit serves UMHS patients, UM employees, the greater Washtenaw County, and employers in Michigan. MFit works closely with Community Health Services (CHS).  CHS has provided funding for various organizations in the community for the purpose of health education.  The Healthy Asian Project, Migrant Worker Health Fair, Muslim Health Fair, and Women of Color Conference are just a few of the events funded by CHS.

PEOC coordinates patient and family education throughout the health system.  PEOC oversees the planning and implementation of patient and family education standards and practices; implementation of related quality improvement projects; development and dissemination of appropriate and current educational methods and materials, and improvement of patient and family education throughout the Health System.

One of the guiding principles of PEOC is that all patient and family education materials and methods shall be based on the individual's: educational level; developmental status; functional ability; and social, cultural, and religious preferences.

MFit has gained increased awareness of the importance to address cultural preferences within future programs, services, and health education materials.  Through PEOC, UMHS continuously strives to improve patient education efforts.  Addressing cultural preferences regarding health education is of great importance.
