About Us

What is the Program for Multicultural Health?
We conduct culturally appropriate and culturally sensitive health promotion, education and preventive programs for the University of Michigan Health System’s staff and for the community at large. Reducing health disparities and achieving equity in health is our main concern.

University of Michigan Health System
The Program for Multicultural Health has a long history of providing a health service education component to the University of Michigan Health System.  This component is hospital-based and promotes culturally competent interactions between health care providers and patients. To help health care professionals provide culturally competent and responsive patient-centered care, we provide cross-cultural training using:

We also conduct needs assessments, consult with hospital staff and work with the Health System administration and units to ensure compliance with Joint Commission and Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services policies for providing culturally sensitive patient care.

Community Outreach
We aim to improve the health status of diverse populations within our community by identifying culturally specific health needs and addressing preferred culturally oriented approaches.

We believe that indigenous communities are important entities from which to gain an understanding of health needs and how these needs should be met. We establish partnerships with communities for improving the overall health status of targeted multicultural populations, and reach communities by building coalitions with community leaders, health and social service organizations, faith-based groups, business organizations and schools.
