Clinical Care
At the University of Michigan Pediatric Comprehensive Weight Management Center, our goal is to help teens achieve and maintain a healthy weight. We understand that weight-loss is a family affair. Therefore, our programs are designed for both children and parents and we ask that at least one parent or guardian attend each session. These family-focused programs include:
- MPOWER Program for Adolescents
MPOWER (Michigan Pediatric Outpatient Weight Evaluation & Reduction) This is an intense six month program for adolescents age 13-17 with a BMI above the 95th percentile. The MPOWER team will provide the adolescent and his or her family with individual, group, and home visits. Our goal is to involve the entire family in dietary modification, participation in regular physical activity and healthy behavioral changes.
- Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery Program
This program is for severely obese adolescents age 13-17 with a BMI over the 95th percentile (BMI of 40 with two severe co morbidities or BMI of 50 with two less severe co morbidities). Adolescents will be evaluated on an individual basis. The adolescent must have a minimum of one year history of medically supervised weight loss efforts and documentation that he or she was unable to achieve sustained weight loss.
