| Healthcare Leadership Institute – Leadership Development Program
The Health Care Leadership Institute, the top tier of Leadership Development within the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), is a collaborative institute developed and managed by the University of Michigan Health System, Business School, and School of Public Health.
The Health Care Leadership Institute provides a leadership development program for senior leaders in the UMHS. The program is a multi-disciplinary learning experience and involves preparatory assignments, class sessions, and action-learning projects. Through this learning experience, the participants learn and apply concepts and tools in the areas of strategy, financial management, change management, managerial leadership, marketing strategy and positioning, operations management, management of 'experts,' information and business process, research and development, innovation, negotiation and decision-making, and strategic human resource management.
Introduction
Academic health systems have always been challenged to balance the competing research, education, and patient care missions. Yet the external and internal stresses of doing so have compounded over time so that we require strong leadership and management as never before. Historically, academic health systems have had no formal mechanisms for developing this talent. The HCLI Leadership Development Program, in its third year, is designed to begin the process of developing leadership and management skills within the UMHS, and to make leadership development a UMHS priority. We seek your participation in this program. Space is limited and is on an invitation only basis.
Program Design
The Program's core curriculum includes approximately 90 hours of in-class work on leadership skills, management tools, and special topics, and will be taught by Business School, Medical School, and School of Public Health faculty. The topics have been developed through research on leadership philosophies, personal interviews, and the vast teaching experience of the University. Your continued input is both welcomed and encouraged as we seek to tailor the Leadership Development Program to meet your personal aspirations, develop future leaders among our faculty and staff, and serve the broader needs of the UMHS.
