Spring has flown by and summer is upon us!

John J. Voorhees, MD FRCP

A Message from the Chair

Thank you to all who joined us at this year's University of Michigan Alumni reception at the AAD in Miami, it was one of our largest turnouts ever. Your presence made our reunion a true celebration of excellence. It was my pleasure to spend the evening with so many vibrant and talented physicians who began their dermatology careers at the U-M.

John J. Voorhees, MD FRCP

Chair, Department of Dermatology

Our Residency Program continues to attract top-notch applicants

The UM Department of Dermatology Residency Program continues to attract top-notch applicants and is one of the largest programs in the nation, with 22 funded residency positions. This year, over 50 individuals were interviewed for six available positions to begin in 2014.

We're top-ranked by referring physicians

Among all clinical departments in the University of Michigan Health Systems, Dermatology was the highest rated on the most recent Referring Physician Satisfaction survey. As well, thanks to the hard work of our residents and medical dermatology faculty, we have had two record breaking months in terms of medical dermatology patient volume (March and April).

Recent noteworthy honors received by our faculty

Beginning this year, Dr. Chris Bichakjian was appointed as Chair of the Non-Melanoma Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). The NCCN sets national treatment guidelines for the treatment of all cancers. NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) are posted with the latest update date and version number.

Anj Dlugosz

Dr. Anj Dlugosz was the prestigious William Montagna Lecturer at the International Investigative Dermatology meeting in Edinburgh this May, lecturing on "Hedgehog signaling in skin biology & tumorigenesis: where, when & how?". As well, Dr. Dlugosz was the 7th Annual Jeffrey Schechner Memorial Lecturer, lecturing on "Hedgehog Functions In Skin Biology And Cancer" at Yale University in April.

Johann Gudjonnson

Dr. Johann Gudjonsson received a sizable grant to fund a prospective study addressing the immunological basis of non-response to anti-TNF agents. Additionally, Dr. Gudjonsson was chosen to receive the Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Award, which will provide him with psoriasis research funding over the next three years.

Dr. Laure Rittie received the U-M Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Outstanding Research Mentor Award in April 2013. UROP creates research partnerships between first and second year students and University of Michigan faculty and research scientists. Annually, UROP recognizes research sponsors who have demonstrated excellence in their role as UROP Research Mentor.

Congratulations to Drs. Marcus Frohm, Paul Harms and Andy Johnston, each of whom received career development awards from the Dermatology Foundation (Clinical CDA in Derm Surgery, Dermatopathology Research CDA, and Research CDA, respectively).
