2nd Year Goals:

The goal of the U-M 2nd Year Dermatology Residency (PGY-3) is to expand upon the foundation built in your first year.

During this period you will:

  • Deepen your diagnostic, clinical and surgical skills.
  • Become an expert in the signs and symptoms of skin diseases.
  • Educate 1st Year residents, residents from other departments and medical students in the basics of dermatological diseases and treatments.
  • Master the use of basic science resources in understanding the mechanisms of diseases and their management.
  • Participate in the journal club to become a critical evaluator and interpreter of literature in clinical dermatology and research.
  • Use statistical techniques and your understanding of study design to assess various articles and research.
  • Understand simple and complex closures, grafts and flaps, as well as all types of cosmetic procedures.
  • Interpret dermatopathology and immunopathology in the diagnosis of skin diseases.
  • Gain knowledge of immunology methods as they pertain to the specialty of dermatology.
  • Understand the employment of immunofluorescence, western blotting, and Tcell gene rearrangement.
  • Teach medical students in the dermatology clinics.

2nd Year Objectives:

The U-M Department of Dermatology, in our commitment to educate our residents in all aspects of the specialty, has developed the following objectives for 2nd Year Residents. These are organized into Patient Care, Professionalism, Communication, Practice Based Learning and Systems Based Practice, and Medical Knowledge. Your performance against these parameters will be the measure your success during your 2nd Year of residency.

Patient Care:

  • Practice greater independence in the management of your patients.
  • Assess patient outcomes to improve future decision-making and to guide your practice management.
  • Problem solve and develop the habits necessary for self-directed life-long learning.
  • Expand your capacity to provide care that is sensitive to patient age, gender and social circumstances.
  • Provide healthcare services that support the patient's total well-being.
  • Educate patients on techniques to control skin disorders and reduce or prevent further problems.
  • Continue to care for your continuity patients under general supervision by faculty.
  • Make patient care decisions and follow patients at the University Health Service.


  • Demonstrate your commitment to continuous professional growth.
  • Illustrate your responsiveness to the needs of your patients and society.
  • Display an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity.
  • Maintain a responsible manner and positive attitude with your patients.


  • Create a therapeutic relationship with patients using effective communication skills, interpretable language, active and responsive listening, patient education and counseling.
  • Assist colleagues and other professionals in providing the best possible care for your patients.
  • Understand and respect your patients' cultural and belief systems, incorporating these into the best patient care.

Practice-Based Learning and Systems-Based Practice:

  • Extract, interpret and integrate information from lectures that is relevant to your patients, applying it after weighing its value across parameters including cost, alternate strategies and adverse effects.
  • Consistently assess the results of your actions.
  • Analyze and evaluate your practice and improve it through consultations on practice management with the department leadership.
  • Demonstrate an ability and willingness to navigate through the maze of regulations and insurance systems to advocate for your patients.
  • Explain circumstances unique to your population of patients, understand the larger population of patients with similar conditions, and use such information for the benefit of your practice.

Medical Knowledge:

  • Master differential diagnosis of complicated patient cases.
  • Master common and uncommon therapies for your patients.
  • Master differential diagnosis of dermatopathology.
  • Develop the ability to perform layered closures, and be familiar with simple flaps and grafts.
  • Be familiar with the use of Botox, chemical peels and lasers in Cosmetic Dermatology.
  • Explain in detail the indication for and techniques of Mohs surgery.
