Cutaneous Surgery and Oncology

Over the course of this six month, cohesive rotation, you will learn Mohs surgery and study complex surgical cases. A stepwise progression from observation and learning through performance and learning, the rotation offers you intensive exposure to Mohs surgery, cosmetic and laser dermatology, and then VA surgery (including surgical clinics with related disciplines).

Resident surgery clinic under faculty supervision is assigned twice (both early and later) in the residency.

Over the three-year residency, the faculty will teach:

  • Review of frozen sections.
  • Stages of the Mohs excision.
  • Methods of repair (elliptical closures, grafts and flaps).
  • Botox.
  • Soft tissue fillers.
  • Chemical peels including glycolic acid peels.
  • Sclerotherapy.
  • Microdermabrasions.
  • CO2 Laser for removal of skin lesions and skin resurfacing.
  • Pulsed Dye Laser for telangiectasia, rosacea, port wine stains, scars.
  • IPL Technologies for skin rejuvenations.
  • Diode Hair Removal Laser.
  • Moderate and large excisions (e.g., cysts, wide local excisions of melanomas).
  • Excisions and biopsies from special areas (e.g., scalp, genitalia, oral mucosa).
  • Coding for services.

The specifically-designed surgical rotation consists of 6 continuous months: 2 months of Mohs followed by two months of Cosmetic Surgery and Lasers plus resident surgery clinic, and finally 2 months assigned to the VA.

At the VA, residents receive special instruction on and perform complex surgery during weekly multidisciplinary Dermatology/ENT surgical clinics, and twice monthly Plastic Surgery/Dermatology clinics. Interaction with faculty from other departments:

  • Provides a broad-based view of dermatosurgery.
  • Teaches alternate approaches.
  • Shows residents what is done by other specialists in cases similar to those handled in the U-M dermatosurgery unit.
  • Provides awareness of the larger context and system of health care.
  • Teaches residents how to call effectively on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
  • Helps residents understand how their patient care affects other health care professionals.
  • Helps teach residents how types of medical practice and delivery systems differ from one another.
  • Teaches residents how to partner with other health care providers to assess, coordinate, and improve health care.
