Programs of the Year
The Executive Director, UMHHC, established a recognition process for noteworthy programs beginning in 1983. Meritorious programs were nominated and selected by the Hospitals' Senior Management Team on an annual basis each fall. Programs receiving "Program of the Year" status are formally recognized at the Administrative Forum meeting in December; and, at the Hospitals and Health Centers Executive Board meeting usually in January and/or February.
Programs that have received "Program of the Year" distinction are:

- 1986 Interventional Cardiology
- 1987 Cochlear Implant Program
- 1988 Radiation Oncology Program
- 1989 Clinical Research Center
- 1990 "The FRIENDS of the University of Michigan Hospitals"
- 1991 Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
- 1992 Breast Care Center
- 1993 Trauma Burn Program
- 1994 Pediatric Surgery (20 Yr. Anniversary)
- 1995 Bone Marrow Transplant Program
- 1996 Primary Care Initiatives
- 1997 Office of Multicultural Health and Women's Health Program
Due to the stiff competition, two programs were selected to receive "Program of the Year" recognition - 1998 Comprehensive Cancer Center
- 1999 Dermatology Programs and Services
Beginning in 2000, two programs will be selected to receive "Program of the Year" recognition. One in the Support Services area, and one, in the Clinical Services area.
