T. Anthony Denton is the Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. He has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2004. Tony is a member of the University of Michigan Health System's Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs cabinet.
Tony grew up in Chicago and obtained his bachelor's degree from Northwestern University. He arrived in Ann Arbor in 1979 to pursue his Master's in Health Services Administration from the School of Public Health.
Tony started his career at the Health System in 1981, starting out as an Administrative Fellow in Academic Health Center Administration. His career evolved, including Human Resources with an emphasis on labor relations, compensation and workforce planning strategies. Tony participated on the start-up team for Mcare HMO during the mid-80s, serving as Manager of Corporate Affairs and Member Services. He obtained a law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1987.
Tony transitioned to Hospital Administration in the early 90's.
Tony's time in administration includes a progressive set of experiences in leadership, operations and financial management, strategic planning, program development, facility planning and construction, governance, process improvement, environmental stewardship, service excellence and community service to benefit all missions in service, education and research.
Tony served as an Associate Administrator, Assistant Director of Operations, Associate Director of Operations, and Associate Director for Clinical Services & Administrator of University Hospital prior to becoming Senior Associate Director and Chief Operating Officer in 2004. Tony was Chairman of the Michigan Visiting Nurse Corporation Board from 1997-2003.
Tony is a member of the Hospitals and Health Centers Executive Board (Secretary) and Vice Chair and Chief Operating Officer of the Michigan Health Corporation.
