Research within the Division of Critical Care

Major areas of research interest focus on analysis of large clinical datasets related to critical care.

1. We currently have over 24,000 individual patient daily encounters in our APACHE database for general surgical and medical ICUs, as well as over 10,000 individual patient first day encounters for all the adult ICUs.

2. We also are in the process of organizing the intraoperative data from our Centricity Database of over 75,000 patients, focusing on cardiac, thoracic and vascular operations.

3. We have implemented our Centricity ICU information system and we are created relational databases of all cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgical patients with their ICU daily data.

4. We have created a "monitor of monitors" that detects and alarms on physiologic perturbations and will be analyzing these data in the next several years.
