What is a Foreign Accent Reduction course?

Speech-Language Pathology in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a course in foreign accent reduction to instruct the non-native English speaker in the pronunciation of standard American English. Although the course is designed for speakers who have had previous courses in English as a second language, goals may also incorporate areas of grammar and vocabulary.

What can I expect from the course?

An evaluation will assess articulation and use of stress and intonation patterns in addition to general observations regarding grammar and vocabulary. A speech-language pathologist will develop an individualized program based on the initial assessment and adjust the goals during the course of treatment. Strategies for monitoring listener understanding and methods of revising communication breakdowns will also be discussed.
Weekly assignments, including daily practice in articulation using a set of audio tapes and specific assignments using new skills in work or home settings, are an important factor in learning to carry-over the skills into daily life. Individuals will meet with their speech-language pathologist one hour each week for up to 26 weeks.
