PEG Colonoscopy Preparations
There are three types of PEG preparations.
1. Drink one (1) gallon of laxative solution. There are several different brands and some are flavored.
2. Take bisacodyl laxative tablets and drink one-half (½) gallon of laxative solution.
3. Drink one-half (½) gallon of laxative solution and one (1) quart of water, without taking laxative tablets.
You will need a prescription for any of these preparations. Your preparation should begin the day before your colonoscopy and finish the day of the procedure. Prepare and chill the oral bowel preparation the morning before the procedure (it tastes better cold). Plan to be near a bathroom for the entire evening. Feelings of nausea and bloating are common; they will go away with time. The bowel cleansing will be improved if you drink at least one (1) gallon of clear liquids during the evening. See the colonoscopy booklet for allowed clear liquids.
An A&D type ointment applied to the rectal area can help with any irritation. The goal is for your stool to be clear or light yellow water.
Eat breakfast the day before the procedure. Do not eat any solid food after breakfast. Oral bowel preparations work best on an empty stomach.
PEG preparation (NuLYTELY, Colyte, GoLYTELY, TriLyte)
___ Between 4 pm and 6 pm the day before your colonoscopy, begin drinking half (about 2 quarts) of the PEG solution, which you have mixed ahead of time and chilled. Drink a glassful (8 ounces) every 15 minutes until the entire two (2) quarts are gone. Your bowels may begin to move in about 30 to 60 minutes.
___ The day of the procedure, drink the remaining two (2) quarts (half of the solution) starting at least 4 hours before your scheduled appointment in the procedure unit. Be sure to add driving time to the 4 hours.
HalfLytely preparation
___ Between 12 noon and 5 pm the day before your colonoscopy, take two (2) bisacodyl laxative tablets with water. Do not crush or chew. Do not take within 1 hour of taking an antacid. The first bowel movement should occur 1 to 6 hours after taking the tablets.
___ After your first bowel movement, or after 6 hours, whichever comes first, begin drinking one (1) quart (about half) of the HalfLytely solution, which you have mixed ahead of time and chilled. Drink eight (8) ounces every 15 minutes, until the quart of solution is gone. This will take at least 1 hour.
___ The day of the procedure, drink the second quart, the remaining half (½) of the solution, starting at least 4 hours before your scheduled appointment in the procedure unit. Be sure to add driving time to the 4 hours.
MoviPrep preparation
___ 6 pm the day before your colonoscopy, begin drinking half (1 quart) of the MoviPrep solution, which you have mixed ahead of time and chilled. Drink a glassful (8 ounces) every 15 minutes until the entire quart is gone. Your bowels may begin to move in about 30 to 60 minutes. Prepare and chill the second quart for the next morning.
___ 7 pm to 9 pm the day before the procedure, drink two 8-ounce glasses of any clear liquid of your choice (see the colonoscopy booklet for allowed clear liquids).
___ The day of the procedure, drink the second chilled quart of MoviPrep solution, an 8-ounce glassful every 15 minutes, starting at least 4 hours before your scheduled appointment in the procedure unit. Also drink two 8-ounce glasses of any clear liquid of your choice (see the colonoscopy booklet for allowed clear liquids). Be sure to add driving time to the 4 hours.
