Nitroglycerin Ointment
Nitroglycerin Ointment, or NTG, can be used as a treatment for relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, making it easier to have a bowel movement. Nitroglycerin relaxes and dilates the rectum so that it is easier to have a bowel movement.
A doctor will prescribe NTG as a 0.2% ointment. To use NTG, place a small pea-sized amount, or about ¼ inch drop, on a gloved finger. Spread the ointment around the anus and just inside the rectum. It’s very important to use a gloved finger to apply the ointment and not to use too much.
NTG ointment may be absorbed through the skin of the hand or finger and cause complications such as headaches, unwanted passing of gas, and unwanted passing of stool. These side effects are usually short-lived and may stem from not using a gloved finger or using too much ointment.
If you experience these complications, decrease the amount of ointment used. Your doctor will tell you how often you should use this medication.
