Belladonna & Opium Suppositories
Belladonna and Opium Suppositories, or B & O Suppositories, can be used to treat Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome (SRUS) and to relax the pelvic floor muscles.
Relaxing the pelvic floor makes it easier to pass a bowel movement. This medication is available by prescription only. It can not be called in to your pharmacy. A doctor will prescribe this medication in 30mg or 60 mg suppositories, usually starting with 30mg.
B & O suppositories can be taken up to three times a day. Because there is opium in this drug, it is very addictive. It is important to use this drug only when you need it so that you do not become addicted. Only use this drug when you are having spasms or having extreme difficulty passing a bowel movement. The best time to use B & O suppositories are right before bedtime & when you have the urge to have a bowel movement. B & O suppositories will not work properly if you do not already have an urge. Also, make sure that you are relaxed and well hydrated before using this medication.
How to use a suppository:
- Wash your hands thoroughly or wear a latex glove
- Lie down on your left side in a comfortable position with your left leg flat and your right leg bent with your knee in the air.
- Try to relax, don’t let yourself get stressed or anxious.
- Remove the wrapper from the suppository and lubricate the pointed end.
- Gently and slowly push the pointed end of the suppository into the rectum about 1 inch. From the tip of your index finger to your first knuckle is about an inch.
- Remove your finger but remain in the same position for about 15 minutes so that the suppository has time to absorb. Don’t stand up.
- Wash your hands.
